A girl's first love. For a boy, someone to live up to. Both in our family's case.

I snapped this photo this morning on my iPhone of my daughter snuggling with her daddy in bed. She raised her hand and gave me the "peace" symbol. To me, it indicated that all was right in the world in her eyes, and she was truly "at peace" with her life and her daddy. (Okay, maybe a bit much for a five-year-old, but then you probably haven't met Sylvia.) So here are just a few of the fathers and children I've been so fortunate to capture together over the years, starting with Sylvia and William.

A blanket of snow has hit the Puget Sound, and my family couldn't be enjoying our days "stuck" at home together more than we are! It feels great to be a kid again through our little ones - watching their excitement as the snow continues to fall and accumulate, and their joy as we build an igloo (no small feat) and sled down our tiny little backyard slope. The games don't have to be grand; even the smallest gestures (like a cup of hot chocolate as they come in and dry off) add the most to their happiness. For me, it's all about the time spent together as FOUR.

New Year = Big News & a Portrait Session Contest!

Happy New Year! The new year has already brought new changes to my photography business, and I am so excited to share the news with you! Starting on February 1st, I will be in a new studio space in the SoDo district - just kitty-corner from Safeco Field in the old Bemis Building. As you can see in the photo above, this 1100 square foot space is filled with gorgeous natural light, and plenty of fun space for your little ones to play! It is truly my dream studio space, and will be perfect for maternity, baby, child and family portraits, as well as business portraits, seniors/teens, and the photography workshops that I teach (see more information below). I cannot wait to start the year off creating beautiful portraits in this new studio. On that note, I do advise that you contact me right away to schedule your next session in order to reserve your date and time of choice!

Thalia + Andy: Issaquah Country Wedding

This was an amazing wedding. I have to admit that of all the different types of weddings I have photographed over the years, my favorite are the do-it-yourself, down-home country weddings! Maybe because I grew up in a small town; maybe because my husband wants to be a farmer and we own a farmers market; maybe because I'm a foodie and love baking and doing crafts...whatever the reason I love the atmosphere, locations, and details of country weddings. This one was no exception. One of my family portrait clients contacted me about photographing her brother's wedding at their sister's farm in Issaquah and I jumped at the chance! Despite the gray skies and occasional drizzle, the couple's joy could not be dampened and the whole gang was so much fun to be around. Here are some of my favorite images from the day:

Creative Work: Seattle Business Photographer

Kristen is an incredible designer and just launched her new website for her company Theta Collaborative. I love the look of it and how she was able to incorporate my images of her work into the website and her brochure. My Favorite Season

My favorite season has begun, and the family and I have been having a great time enjoying it so far! The other weekend I took the kids and a friend to Bob's Corn in Snohomish for a fun Sunday afternoon at the farm. A few minutes after we arrived, it dumped rain! But we stayed dry in their little country store until it cleared and it turned out to be a beautiful day. We bought a few treats, the kids swung on their fabulous tire swing, and we rode on the tractor down to their enormous corn maze. (We did the much, much smaller just-for-kids version, but it was still a challenge for the little ones.) We headed home after a little BBQ (sold right there on the premises on the weekend). The best part of the day - my 7-year-old son, a self-proclaimed "indoor person" said to me, "Mom, I'm loving being an outdoor person!" We'll be back to Bob's again soon.

Photographing Teenagers

I happen to LOVE it! I love working with graduating seniors, teenagers and pre-teens because you get to witness a young person on the verge of becoming more fully realized, more confident and sure of themselves, on the verge of, well, everything! Often this young person "blossoms" (for lack of a better word) during the photo session. They often start out feeling awkward, maybe even a little embarrassed, and by the end, they look pretty pumped up, happy and confident! It's the one time that I will actually show a client their images on my camera as the photo session goes along, and that's because the more they see what I see, the better. I see a beautiful young person, and I like to think that through the portraits I capture, they see one too.

I also encourage parents not to stop the annual photo sessions once their children reach school age. If you do, you are missing out on capturing every wonderful age! The quick school portrait isn't enough. It may be well-lit, and maybe your child's hair was in place for once, but few capture a child's personality, spirit or essence.

Here are a few favorites from recent senior, teen and pre-teen photo sessions. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

I haven't seen this beautiful little boy since he was a newborn. Where did the year go? Now Solomon is an active baby boy on the move! He was going up and down the hall, but I managed to catch him just before he went out of sight.

Solomon's daddy is a wonderful guitar player, and Solomon was definitely interested in making music of his own already!

But the best photos came when we went outside! It's amazing what a change in scenery can do for a little one. (And simple things like blocks and bubbles never hurt.)

I LOVE this shot of Solomon and his incredibly beautiful mommy.

And "the" shot of the morning - all three members of this gorgeous family smiling at the camera!

It may take a while, but that's why I prefer to spend an hour to two hours with my clients. These shots may not have happened within the first 15-30 minutes. I love the variety of images I get with spending a longer period of time with these families.

Products: Gallery-Wrapped Canvases

I wanted to share a few photos of gallery-wrapped canvases that have been created for my clients. Taking the images is just the first part of my job - the other is helping my clients figure out the best way to live with those images. Canvases are a great way to display either a single image or multiple images.

These first two images are of a single, large canvas in one of my client's homes. We designed it to fit over their fireplace mantle, and the image lent itself well to the long width of the canvas.

These last two images are of two canvas collages that were designed to hang on my client's wall next to one another. (These images were taken of the canvases in my home for the time being.) We incorporated some of the colors in my client's home, and I loved the play of the aqua/turquoise colors off of her vibrant red dress! This type of canvas collage is easily adapted to the client's personal style and needs. I can't wait to get them up on her wall and post a few shots of them here soon!

I loved spending a couple of hours last Sunday with one-week-old Phoebe and the rest of her beautiful family (including big sister Paige and pup Angus, who would like everyone to know that he was there first). Phoebe couldn't have been more agreeable, and we were even able to get Paige (a toddler) to participate at times. In fact, sometimes even when we weren't expecting her (like in the first photo below). All in all, I love these images and look forward to photographing Phoebe as she grows up, just like her sister.

Stop Time: Assignment #5

Assignment #5: Document your simple pleasures. We all have them - simple or small things that make us extremely happy. Below you will find a few of mine. Again, it doesn't require a big set-up or fancy piece of equipment (I again used my iPhone Hipstamatic App for this one). Just lay out some of your favorite things, make sure there's decent light (these were all lit only by window light), and fire away! Get creative with angles, zoom in, etc. A macro lens (or choosing the macro setting on your camera - look for the tulip symbol) helps to focus when the camera is just a few inches away from your subject. The main thing, again, is that you are documenting the simple things that bring a smile to your face.

Library Day!!! This is my most recent stack of borrowed books. I L-O-V-E books, especially cookbooks. But I've sworn off buying them, unless I absolutely have to have my own copy. Instead, whenever I read about a book I'm interested in (and that happens often), I go onto my library's website and search for the title. For years, I figured that libraries only housed relics, but when I started using the Search feature on the library's website, I found out that they have almost every new title that I've been interested in. I then click on "Place a Hold", enter my library card number and choose what branch I want them sent to. Within a few days (to a few weeks, at most), I receive an email from my library stating that they are ready to be picked up.

With cookbooks, there are usually just a handful of recipes that I know I'll try, so I'll make photocopies of those pages at home and file them in my recipe notebook. With the book above (entitled "Baked"), I know I'm going to have to purchase my own copy - there are just too many recipes that I'm dying to try. (See Root Beer Bundt Cake above.)

A simple food pleasure: New Mini Brie Bites from Trader Joe's! The softest brie I've ever felt, housed in mini individual portions. No more dry, crusty brie going to waste (since I'm the only one in the house who eats it).

Another Trader Joe's find: Cha Siu Bao (Chinese Style Pork Buns). Oh, how I love these little steamed buns. (Oops, that didn't come out right.) For years, I've squeezed through the crowds at Pike Place Market in order to order Barbecue Pork Hum Baos. I've tried several varieties of frozen ones in the past but nothing came close, until now. Leave it to TJ's to again come up with a little piece of heaven (this time in the form of a little steamed doughy bun).

Lastly, a little snack creation that my 4-year-old daughter made for her daddy to congratulate him on a job interview. Super sweet banana guy!

Assignment #4 in documenting your life: The size of your equipment doesn't matter.

Did you know that for only a few dollars, you could have an extremely easy-to-use and stylish camera at your fingertips? For those of you with an iPhone, you can purchase the Hipstamatic app for only $1.99 and start taking some seriously great photos right away. (Add-ons like the Black & White film version seen below is available for another dollar.) The Hipstamatic app imitates vintage cameras and film, and even includes a flash. It's now available in three resolution sizes - small, medium and large (for printing). Another bonus is that no post-processing or editing is needed - the images look great as shot and are ready to be emailed, or posted online right away.

If you don't have an iPhone, chances are you still have a camera on your phone or a small point-and-shoot. While cell phone cameras and most point-and-shoots don't replace the quality of an SLR, they do make up for it in convenience. Here are a few shots that I took last night as my kids bathed and today waiting for the school bus with my son. I think they are wonderfully artistic and capture those sweet little moments that often get overlooked. Try it out for yourself!

Assignment #3 - Keep It Neutral!

Try photographing your children in a really neutral space. White or neutral-colored walls are best, and keep their clothing color scheme neutral as well. Instead of having your children were matching outfits, pick two to three coordinating colors instead. These photos featuring Eli and Audrey took place in the studio, and their light blue and cream-colored clothing matched the studio's walls and floor. The result - minimal distractions from their wonderful faces!

Assignment #2: The Alternative/Out-of-the-Box Family Portrait

Try doing something a bit unconventional. Mix it up. Keep it casual, playful and unposed. Move it close or move way back. Avoid asking the family members to look at the camera - instead catch them in a moment of dialogue or game-playing, or engage them in conversation yourself. If you want to be included in the family portrait, ask another family member or friend, and then make sure to interact with your family (instead of moving into a pose).

I've decided to try something a little different on the blog. Blogs take a lot of time and that's just not something I have a lot of (nor am I willing to part with what little free time I have to spend with my family). Also, instead of just highlighting images from recent photo shoots, I want this blog to be useful by 1) documenting my whole life (including that of my time with my husband and kids and pets, etc.) and 2) by sharing the knowledge and experience I have capturing that life with my camera. So I'm going to try to post more frequently but precisely, and offer up quick lessons on how to document your life and capture your kids on a regular basis (thereby "stopping time").
I will use examples from portrait sessions and weddings, but also personal photographs and anecdotes as well. If the pace is a bit slow and you're anxious to learn more about how I photograph children, then sign up for my Photography for Mommies (and Daddies) workshop. (See post below.) But whether you are a client, another photographer, a parent or photo enthusiast, I hope these posts will inspire you to pick up your camera and document all of life's wonderful little (and often overlooked) moments.

Assignment #1:
Photograph your child (spouse, pet, etc.) engaged in a favorite activity. If they don't notice you taking their picture, that's even better! Don't ask them to smile, or look at you. (In fact, you may not even be able to see the subject's face, as illustrated below.) In terms of composition, it makes for a stronger sense of realness if you get down to your subject's eye level. This is just one image from a recent session that I did, but it quickly became one of my favorites from this year. Five-month-old Ellie and her mom are exchanging smiles, and I just don't think moments get much better than this.

I'm so smitten with this two beautiful boys, and feel lucky to spend a little time in their company every year. This year it was a beautiful evening at the blueberry farm. The weather and the light was just perfect (the mosquitos were another story), and the boys could not have been more photogenic. Pricing Photography

I've been reading an extremely good book about marketing called "Selling the Invisible" by Harry Beckwith. In a chapter on pricing, the author illustrates why it is often so difficult for those who offer a service to price their work. Here is the excerpt that I wanted to share:

"What is talent and thought worth - and why is some worth so much? What can you reasonably charge? Good questions. Before you answer them, consider this story about Pablo Picasso:
A woman was strolling along a street in Paris when she spotted Picasso sketching at a sidewalk cafe. Not so thrilled that she could not be slightly presumptuous, the woman asked Picasso if he might sketch her, and charge accordingly.
Picasso obliged. In just minutes, there she was: an original Picasso.
"And what do I owe you?" she asked.
"Five thousand francs," he answered.
"But it only took you three minutes," she politely reminded him.
"No," Picasso said. "It took me all my life."
Don't charge by the hour. Charge by the years."

I'm no Picasso, but I do consider myself an artist. I offer a service, as well as products, and try to price each fairly. Those of us in any service industry struggle with pricing all of the time. Seriously, I don't think a day goes by that I don't reevaluate my pricing structure or fees. I don't consider my competitors when I'm setting my fees (though I'm aware of some of them), as we each have our own costs-per-sale and overhead, and that just wouldn't make sense. I take into account all of my costs of doing business (advertising and marketing, health insurance, studio rent, software and templates, etc.) and the costs for each job (supplies, post-processing services, etc.).

Then I have to try to account for my time. This is where it gets sketchier. Digital photography changed my life, and takes far more of my time than film did. With film, I could drop it off at the lab, go about my week and then return when it was ready. Now, I spend hours and hours in front of my computer (and away from my kids), and have to invest more money in equipment, software, templates and post-processing services. So not only is it more time-consuming, in the end digital photography costs me more too. (So why not go back to film? Because for the most part, digital capture solves many of film's limitations.) Either way, I have to put a price on my time and talent. It's not easy. As artists, we're used to suffering for our art. But now it's not just me - I have a family to support, a mortgage, and all of the other things that come along with adulthood. If I don't make money at this, I don't have a business. I have a really expensive hobby, and one I cannot afford to keep.

As Beckwith points out in his book with the story of the Picasso sketch, I have to take into account the years of training and education (at least three), and the years of doing business (nine), in determining my service fees. After all, aren't they part of what my clients are receiving? Years of learning photography from the basics to advanced techniques. Years of learning how to light, pose and stage shots, so that my clients look their best. Years of figuring out the best/most photogenic spots in the Puget Sound area. Years designing albums and books, and assembling frames. Years of working with children (including eight years as a nanny and six more as a parent), and gaining the experience and patience to bring out their best during a portrait session. As a portrait client and as a parent, what price would you put on working with someone with that level of experience?

Everyone who worked on Robert and Tara's wedding at JM Cellars in Woodinville this past September absolutely fell in love with this couple. We were all taken by their kindness, generosity and obvious love for one another. Elaina and I covered them getting ready at Willows Lodge, where we also took the formal portraits (and where we were able to include their chocolate lab in some of the portraits as well). We then headed to the fabulous JM Cellars, where rain couldn't dampen anyone's spirits or fun. The couple's creativity spilled over to their invitations and signage (created by the bride), favors (the plushest blankets I've ever felt for guests to take home) and an incredible dessert bar (which included vanilla ice cream cones!). And then there were those incredible Jimmy Choo's! Here are just a few favorites.

Introducing the "Session Canvas"

I finally got around to doing something with my own personal photos this summer - I created a 16-image canvas all about summer. (I plan to do one for each season.) I think it's a great way to show off 16 images from your sessions with me, though, or let it showcase your wedding day!

The canvas size varies (though always in a square format), and you can request that I add or subtract the white floral/fauna overlays, depending on your preferences. The images are laid out in these cool "fleur" shapes. I think the whole thing is beautiful, and again, a great way to show off an entire session. Of course, being a gallery wrapped canvas, it's ready to hang as is (no framing required).

Senior Portrait Transformation

I love doing senior/teen portraits. They are always about a young man or woman on the verge of becoming an adult, full of hope, promise, vulnerability, confidence and a bit of awkwardness. Often, as in this case, I get to witness a young woman in the midst of a transformation. I love working with teens during their portrait session, putting them at ease or sometimes at unease, in order to draw them out. This is the one time that I will show my client some of their images as we go along, because I want them to see themselves the way that I and the rest of the world see them - they're beautiful (and often have no idea)!

This was certainly the case with Sara (whom I hope I'm not embarrassing here), but she literally transformed before our eyes. My sister is a makeup artist, and she really did a great job in bringing out Sara's beautiful face while keeping the look young, fresh and natural. Sara wore the outfit she was most comfortable in to begin with (the Iron Maiden t-shirt, jeans, etc.), but soon gave in to my suggestion that she change into something that was both more feminine and less distracting from her incredible face. I could see the change immediately, and I think we were all thrilled with the way the photos turned out. I'm also thrilled for Sara, because I think she finally sees herself as we see her - beautiful!

Special Exhibit/Benefit for Soulumination!

I will be participating this month in the Everett Art Walk on Saturday, August 21st from 3-7 pm at the studio (2829 Rockefeller Avenue in downtown Everett) with a special exhibit of the work of Soulumination. Soulumination, founded by Lynette Huffman Johnson, celebrates the lives of children and parents facing life threatening conditions by providing professional photographs--free of charge--of these special individuals and their families. The life-affirming photographs of Soulumination are an enduring, positive record of the child's brief life, and provide a loving legacy for the children of parents lost to terminal illness.

Of all the work I do, it is by far the most difficult and rewarding. And it is only made possible by the contributions of other photographers and tons of volunteers, as well as donations. In addition to the exhibit of their work, a few artists will be selling their art and crafts to help raise money to continue this great work. I hope you will stop by the studio on August 21st!

I am having the busiest summer of my career! I realize that I haven't blogged for over a month - not for lack of work but because I have had so much work. I am eager to share my latest portraits with you, but client work always comes first! I had to post some of the images from a wedding I shot two weeks ago at DeLille Cellars in Redmond. The bride and groom, as well as the entire wedding party, were absolutely stunning. It was a perfect July day (which we can't always count on around here). Even the sheep came up to the fence while we were taking portraits in the orchard to say hello, and nibble on a few apples. Having professional portraits taken on a regular basis is invaluable, and nothing could replace the priceless gift of a photograph that captures you with your children. However, I know that I can't be with you every day (no, honestly, I can't). Thousands of picture-worthy moments are being captured by you, Mom or Dad, and I want to ensure that you create the best photographs possible.

This is not for photographers, either professional or aspiring. I will not cover any aspects of the business of photography, and I also promise not to get too technical. This is a presentation for parents on how to take better photographs of their own family. I will explain what makes a photograph great (subject matter, composition, lighting, etc.) and how I have created some of my award-winning images. I will show you how to use the camera equipment that you already own, recommend some equipment that you might add to your arsenal, show you how to trick your children into being the perfect subjects, and cover when and where to take your family's photographs. I will also address the basics of editing, printing and storing your photographs, so that you can finally get them out of your camera or computer and into books and frames!

This event is more of a lecture with a question-and-answer period, though I highly recommend that you bring your camera with you. A subsequent hands-on workshop for those who want to try these techniques on live models will be offered in the very near future to those who attend this presentation.

The fee is $99/per individual and $159/couple, and includes beverages and snacks, as well as a CD of my presentation to review at home anytime you need to. I was delighted to meet Miss Molly recently! She couldn't have been easier to photograph with her cheery disposition, homemade hats and tutus, great outfits and all around cuteness.
